Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a neuro-immune skin condition that causes hard, raised bumps on your skin. They are extremely itchy, especially at night. You might only have a few bumps or a large collection of bumps and it can be widespread. PN can develop anywhere on your body.
PN Causes
The exact cause of Prurigo Nodularis (PN) is unknown. It is a complex skin condition thought to have many different and sometimes overlapping causes. Stress can both trigger and be caused by PN, but it is unclear why and how. However, we know that once the skin has become itchy, scratching and rubbing will cause the skin nerve endings to become thicker, more inflamed and cause further itching – this “scratch-itch” cycle can greatly worsen the condition.
- Nodular prurigo can start after an insect bite in some people.
- Stress can make PN worse.
- There is a strong association with atopy, i.e., having asthma, eczema and hay fever in people with nodular prurigo.
