Two targeted treatments, Dupixent and Nemluvio have been approved in some countries, including the USA to treatment Prurigo Nodularis. In the UK both treatments have yet to be approved by NICE for reimbursement on the NHS.
A number of off-label or empirical treatments have been used by clinicians to date. The treatments are aimed at stopping the skin itching:
- Topical corticosteroids.
- Tacrolimus 0.1% ointment.
- Emollients.
- Antihistamine tablet or syrups.
- Phototherapy. Some examples include narrowband UVB phototherapy and psoralen and UVA phototherapy.
- Immune-suppressing treatments. These treatments aim to reduce inflammation and include the following:
- Oral corticosteroids (short-term only)
- Ciclosporin
- Methotrexate
- Azathioprine
